Not only does this message offer hope in the form of a group of heavily armed men and a functioning outpost of society, the man making the broadcast claims to have found the answer to infection. Itll be risky, sure, but Franks got an old taxi cab down in the garage, and he thinks they can make it. Besides, what else are they going to do? But before they all roll out, they ought to consider this: When was the last time you saw a zombie movie in which the military wasnt up to no good? While Im not sure the zombie movie needed to be reinvented, it certainly could use some rejuvenation, and if 28 Days can accomplish that, then Im all for it. And it seems to me that this movie could very well do just that if given half a chance. 28 Days is easily the best serious zombie movie to come out in many a year probably since the 1980s. Im even willing to forgive the paucity of zombie action on the grounds that it makes very good sense in terms of the story the Infected are portrayed as being so dangerous that the only reliable way to survive an encounter with them is not to have it in the first place. Like the fast and invulnerable zombies of The Return of the Living Dead, this answers the longstanding objection that any fool could handle a Romero-esque zombie outbreak, just so long as they had the presence of mind to keep fucking moving. 28 Days also scores in being pretty much the only movie of its type that I know of that makes the issue of food, water, and utilities a major plot point and deals with it in a realistic manner. And while it does fall into the usual rut of making the military men the bad guys, at least it has the integrity to give Major Henry West Christopher Eccleston, of eXistenZ and The Others and his men an intelligible, defensible reason for doing what they do. Finally, its a real treat, after all those years worth of zombie flicks by the likes of Bruno Mattei, Andrea Bianchi, and Fred Olen Ray, to see one directed by a cinematic stylist of Danny Boyles caliber. 28 Days is a movie filled with images that get immovably lodged in your brain, like the shadows of the Infected skittering frenetically across the wall of a traffic tunnel or the Manchester skyline in flames on the horizon at twilight. So while its true that I expected more zombies, Im entirely satisfied with what I got instead. its complicated rihanna Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris R If youve come from our parental review of this film and wish to return to it, simply click on your browsers BACK button. Horror: A handful of survivors of an infectious calamity try to avoid the rabid and infected zombies who are after them. Twenty-eight days after a research chimp in a lab attacks several people, bicycle courier Jim CILLIAN MURPHY wakes up in a deserted hospital in a seemingly deserted London. Unaware of whats occurred, he wanders through the streets hoping to find food and an explanation for what has happened. To his horror, he discovers a church full of zombie-like creatures, including a rabid priest who tries to attack him. Fleeing into the night, hes saved by Selena NAOMIE HARRIS and Mark NOAH HUNTLEY, two non-infected survivors who tell him never to travel alone, especially at night when the monsters come out. After discovering that his parents are dead, Jim joins the duo and they eventually run into fellow survivor Frank BRENDAN GLEESON and his daughter Hannah MEGAN BURNS whove barricaded themselves in their high-rise. Upon hearing a random radio broadcast from Major Henry West CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON promising a sanctuary of sorts, the various survivors then set out across the countryside hoping to find it, all while having to contend with the rabid zombies and their post-apocalyptic world. Due to having often been on the wrong end of the food chain back in prehistoric days, humans have an instinctual reflex to avoid being eaten. That hasnt escaped the notice of novelists and filmmakers whove scared the pants off readers and viewers by having all sorts of animals think Jaws or monsters such as in Alien hunting down their human prey. Most violent deaths in more civilized times were and continue to be more along the lines of human on human attacks. Thus, those employed in the business of scaring customers turned to vampires, boogeymen including masked serial killers and the old standby, zombies, to evoke the same reaction. Director Danny Boyle The Beach, Trainspotting uses a variation of the latter in 28 Days Later, a stylish but decidedly low-budget and ultimately disappointing effort. To begin with, I should point out that this isnt a sequel to the 2000 Sandra Bullock film, 28 Days. Although it may have been fun to see Miss Congeniality as a zombie or being chased by them, the film has nothing to do with her or the potent cocktail of the same name. As written by Alex Garland novelist of The Beach, the effort starts off promisingly enough as a research chimp force-fed images of violence like Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange goes berserk and attacks some people. 28 days later, our protagonist Cillian Murphy On the Edge, Disco Pigs wakes up in a deserted hospital in an apparently deserted or decimated London and Great Britain. Its akin to Eduardo Noriega and Tom Cruise doing something similar in Open Your Eyes and Vanilla Sky respectively, but this dream turns out to be a true nightmare. After discovering that the majority of the leftover humans are infected with some sort of virus thats driving them mad and has them in permanent attack mode, our dazed hero and a few other survivors try to avoid the rabid, zombie-like creatures and make their way to a sanctuary of sorts that may or may not exist.
